The department has a high frequency of written and oral quizzes. Each marking period includes several full-period tests.

A test usually includes various parts such as fill-in sections, translations and writing complete sentences. A quiz may contain vocabulary, fill-in exercises or it may have a multiple choice format. The Midterm and Final Exams contain objective and subjective components.

Oral quizzes take various forms: dictation, statements by the teacher to which the students respond orally or in writing, and reading of texts in the target language. Tests and quizzes which may include a bonus or extra-credit question, are never graded on a curve; a curve may be used on a Midterm or Final Exam.

It is up to the individual teacher to assign projects, especially during the time that students have off from school. Learning a foreign language is a continual and cumulative process, therefore the department views vacations as a good time to review and remain in contact with the materials learned so far. Such projects are a part of the course and are not to be used as "extra-credit." Students handing in work late will be penalized.

Testing materials are returned to the students after a reasonable time. Partial credit is given when answering in sentence form. Missing accents and misspelled words on dictations and quizzes will be penalized.
